Crime scene decontamination consists of removing all elements that are foreign to the original setting.
This may include forensic elements such as the victim’s body or other pieces of evidence, the presence of police personnel or unauthorized individuals, or the adjustment of the image to match the lighting conditions under which the alleged event likely took place.
The purpose of this process is to allow the judge to better assess the scene, or to enable the analysis of the photograph as it should have been taken if the investigation had been carried out properly (e.g., in cases where police officers are seen walking through areas where only the victim and evidence should be present).
This often represents a challenge both for the court and for the party responsible for presenting how the criminal event allegedly occurred.
